Dom André Louf (+2010) was abbot of the Trappist-Cistercian monastery of Mont-des-Cats in northern France from 1963 to 1997. This book brings together talks given to a variety of audiences in which he shared his spiritual experience from both his life of prayer and his life in community.

About the Author
André Louf, OCSO, served as abbot of the Cistercian Abbey of Mont-des-Cats for thirty-five years until his retirement in 1997. His previous books in English include The Cistercian Way, Tuning in to Grace, Mercy in Weakness, Grace Can Do More, and The Way of Humility, all published by Cistercian Publications.

Monastic Series continues

This is another excellent book in the Monastic Wisdom series from Cistercian Publications.
Andre Louf was Abbot at a Trappist monastery in Northern France from 1963-1997, and this short but insightful book is a collection of his talks and thoughts from during that time. Topics include obedience, prayers, liturgy, psalms, and pilgrimage. In fact, Chapter 8, his time recalling two pilgrimages he took part in, is one of the best in the book.
The final chapter, barely four pages in length, is incredibly one of the best also. It shows the love behind the death and resurrection of Jesus. I wish it would've been longer because it's so beautifully written.
Anyone wanting to go deeper in their spiritual walk will benefit from IN THE SCHOOL OF CONTEMPLATION, not just contemplatives.

Remarkable and beautiful reflections are presented on how to see human weakness ...

Andre Louf is in the ancient term, an Abba, a spiritual Father. He presents a broad sweep of contemplative topics which are historical, scholarly, theological and in some chapters go into the abstract weeds. What was striking among many topics was the chapter on Community. Remarkable and beautiful reflections are presented on how to see human weakness of members in community life as a sign of God's grace in community. Louf reflects depth in living community with the reality of human weakness rather than the image of 'Peter Perfects' or the 'super' community vying for rungs on the 'ladder of perfection'. Holiness is seen in diversity rather than in the rarefied atmosphere of group perfection tolerating, ignoring, pitying the other, deemed less spiritually developed. A good read for Religious Superiors of community as well as anyone dealing with relationships in day to day life.
An underlying theme is the reawakening and deepening of understanding of the Spirit as the Light within all of us in all areas of life.
Ecumenical ideas written in 1970 are still relevant today. Ecumenism is seen as steps in mutual humility coming from the Spirit and not as removing theological bricks in the historical walls of division.
In the School of Contemplation is provocative for anyone living within a Monastery or outside a Monastery. It deserves a second reading in the spirit of Lectio.
