As rumours fly, secrets explode and reality blurs with fantasy, he is both remembered and reinvented by each of the play’s characters in their own way.

Though Willy’s self-appointed, newfound and worldly wise mentor had cautioned him, “There’s nothing safe. We’re never safe. If you ever thought you were, you were in denial,” it’s too late for this dreamer who ignored the best advice he ever got from those who cared for him: “You just don’t find a soul mate—you have to invent them. Cuz love at first sight sure don’t last.” What lasts at the end of the day is memory—the necessary tale we tell ourselves to both make sense of our past and to give ourselves hope for a future without having to lose those we have loved.

Bryden MacDonald
Bryden MacDonald is a playwright, director, dramaturge, and teacher. His published plays are Whale Riding Weather, The Weekend Healer, and Divinity Bash/nine lives. His latest play, With Bated Breath, premiered at Montreal’s Centaur Theatre in April 2009. He has created and directed theatrical interpretations of the words and music of Leonard Cohen (Sincerely a Friend), Carol Pope & Rough Trade (Shaking the Foundations), and Joni Mitchell (When All the Slaves Are Free). He has taught and coached students at The National Theatre School of Canada and McGill University, served as resident dramaturge at Playwrights Workshop Montreal, and was the mentoring director for Imago Theatre’s Inaugural Directors’ Gym. He has conducted workshops or been artist-in-residence or guest artist at a number of theatres and festivals across the country, including The Stratford Shakespeare Festival, Factory Theatre, and Neptune Theatre. He has sat on juries at The Canada Council and been a member of the board of directors for The Quebec Drama Federation. He is happy to be making his home in Nova Scotia again.

Gottfried Feder’s Manifesto for Breaking the Financial Slavery to Interest is one of a series of three books by the important, albeit now obscure German campaigner against parasitic debt-finance-capitalism. It was Feder who gave opposition to debt-finance and a demand for a new banking system a technical foundation without which the National Socialist economic and financial policies might not have gone beyond a vague enmity towards capitalism because of its identification with Jews. It was left to the embryonic National Socialist group to see in Feder’s ideas the means of achieving both freedom from debt-bondage and the means by which the state could assume its prime duty to issue the community’s own credit limited only by its productivity and creativity. Even though, as the Reich progressed, Feder, like many other early idealists, was relegated to minor rank within the Third Reich, his fundamental ideas provided the basis for Germany’s socio-economic revival while the rest of the world wallowed in Depression. In this respect Feder is Germany’s equivalent to New Zealand’s John A. Lee, Australia’s Jack Lang, U.S.A.’s Father Charles Coughlin, and Britain’s C. H. Douglas and Arthur Kitson. Feder deserves an honoured place amongst the early fighters against usury-capital, a subject which continues to be, perhaps more than ever, of vital relevance to the world.

Good read for those who can actually create an independent thought.

Feder, proposed what many during his time were already very well aware of. Very few so-called "educated" people, during the present day have even a modicum of a clue, of where we are , much less how we got here. The Bankers, and their Usury, have made blind, complacent slaves of Humanity, and they now own, and control most of the World's governments. Usury, has spread like a terminal cancer, which there is now little hope of ever recovering from. This book is a good read for the truly educated independent thinker, but it will probably leave many somewhat depressed. Feder's message will probably be all but totally lost on the average person, who has been taught what to think, and believe, since birth.

Great Book!!!

I can't rate this book high enough though it is based on "common sense" financial principles that everyone should be aware of. I'm sure this book will get low marks for being (drum roll) "anti-Semite" but the Truth hurts, because the financial world we deal with and WHO is behind all of this "debt slavery" is exposed in this book and there is no denying it!!! There is only finger pointing, screaming defamation to obscure the Facts presented here, name calling, etc. etc. but the Truth presented in this book cannot be denied, only ignored. THIS is REAL reason why Germany had to be destroyed and the so-called "allies" have perpetuated their own financial slavery ever since. Instead of listening and believing all of the lies you've heard all of your lives, get this book and see/read the Truth for yourself for once.

The author writes straight and to the point, backing up his facts from history. It is so interesting to read what happened to these items, even what supposedly happened. As a lifelong Catholic, this book filled in some blanks, and works as a kind of spiritual exercise. I recommend it to anyone who is curious or wonders why there are so many claims of ownership of thorns and nails from the crucifixion of Christ.

Automata, languages and machines: an evergreen of lasting value

An all-time classic book, the first part of a two volume series, written by Samuel Eilenberg
who is one of the founding fathers of category theory. The intended readership consists of
pure mathematicians and theoretical computer scientists. This book is indispensable for
several fields in theoretical computer science that have arisen from automata theory and
formal languages, including recent developments in combinatorics
on finite and infinite words (see the books by Lothaire, an influential french writers collective).
Infinite words are also called infinite sequences or streams, and include the important family
of automatic streams (Allouche and Shallit, Automatic Sequences). The book is also important
for research in coalgebraic techniques, the area in computer science that is concerned with specification
and manipulation of infinite objects such as streams or trees.
The two volumes A and B are out of print. This Part A with 451 pages was published in 1974.
This is a marvellous book, written in a clear, precise mathematical style, enjoyable to read
and very well structured. My second-hand copy of the book, formerly belonging to an american
university library (St. John Fisher College) was in very good shape.

On the Bloody Road to Jesus is a study of the rich religious legacy of the Chiricahua Apaches and its inevitable collision with Christianity. Beginning with Apache creation stories, H. Henrietta Stockel describes Chiricahua beliefs and ceremonies before going on to recount the conditions of the Spanish colonial frontier at the moment of conquest. Subsequent chapters trace events that culminated in the surrender of the Chiricahua Apaches in 1886, the twenty-seven years of incarceration as American prisoners of war in Florida, Alabama, and Oklahoma, and the life-changing consequences of the children's education in government-sponsored boarding schools.

Stockel portrays an unbroken sequence of economic motivations on the part of the Spanish, Mexican, and American governments, each eager to expand their respective territories. Equally unbroken was the resistance of the Apaches to indoctrination. According to Stockel, the Chiricahua Apaches never completely surrendered their traditional religion to Christianity. Like other syncretistic religions, their beliefs incorporated aspects of Christian dogma even while they protected their own religion from outsiders.

This is a complicated story rich in cross-cultural encounters on the battlefield, in mission churches, and in the classroom. Stockel's research and writing bring to life the fierce resistance of a heroic people.

This book is actually an expanded review of the Fitchett-Nolan book and its thesis. For each of the nine cases and for each of the three associated critiques, I have provided a summary. Following that, I add my own critique of each case itself and of each associated critique. Following that is a summary and critique of the chapter on ethical concerns by David B. McCurdy. Finally, I set the entire book in the context of the clinical pastoral training tradition.
Most of the published work on clinical pastoral supervision seems to have focused on principles and theory. The value of the Fitchett-Nolan work is that it is based on specific clinical cases, the nine cases that are published in the book itself. I hope they will have set the standard for future publications. Theory is useful, but nothing is quite as useful nor quite as engrossing as a specific clinical case.
Fitchett, in his introduction to the book, argues for more published cases in the clinical pastoral training field. The current paucity of published clinical cases is actually puzzling in that the movement itself began a century ago with the study of cases. The founder of clinical pastoral training, Anton Boisen, actually made himself and his personal troubles the principal "case." Therefore, I second Fitchett's call for more published cases in the field as the best route for learning the art and science of pastoral care, counseling. and psychothereapy.
The work that follows is a running commentary on the 9 cases as well as the 27 commentaries on the cases and on the summary essay, "Ethical Issues in Case Study Publication.” In addition to the two editors, six additional persons appear as critics of some of the cases. For better or for worse, I have commented on each and every one.
I have elected throughout not to name the specific chaplains whose work is included herein. I am not thereby keeping a confidence. Their names and current positions are clearly identified in the Fitchett-Nolan book itself. But I am electing not to expose them further. I prefer to grant them what meager privacy yet available to them, which is not much.
I actually feel some admiration for the nine who put their clinical pastoral work on view for all the world to see—and to pick apart. It is a very courageous choice to put one's work in the public arena for scrutiny. It is also potentially hurtful, particularly if one has thin skin, and, more so, if one has enemies eager to enter the fray for purposes of devaluation. No one is without flaws. No professional works without missteps. And no one is immune to certain blindnesses. But few would choose to lay their flaws and missteps open to public scrutiny. We have to applaud the courage of these presenting chaplains and pastoral counselors who have laid their professional work open to public examination in this book. They have my admiration and my esteem.
But, as the reader will see, I have not elected to coddle or to consider the feelings of the presenters of the nine cases published here. I am assuming that they are professionals prepared to receive straightforward critique of their work. Nor do I spare their published critics. Nor do I myself expect to be spared strong rebuttal, particularly in instances where I might have been wrong or uninformed.

Author recaptures the pastoral care tradition

This book clearly articulates, though not specifically, but by critique the different approaches to "pastoral care." The two approaches to pastoral care are from CPSP and ACPE.

Admission: the author of this book did not make this claim. Knowing the history CPE history and training I am making this claim.

Reading, I found again that which I had lost: a sense of the soul of pastoral care—to listen for the voice, the humanity of a patient As I read, I was reminded of my first two units of training and the excitement of pastoral ministry. Perhaps most of all I found the crispness of the commentary helpful as I survey the often fuzzy landscape of both parishes and institutional work in this day and age.
