My favorite Bird Guide book for Southern Africa

I travel to southern Africa at least once a year on safari. I have found the Sasol guide book to be my favorite, and I use it extensively -- and I also own Newman's and Roberts (both good choices), as well as three other bird guide books for the region. If you have a little bit of birding experience, then this is an excellent book to consider. I may be wrong, but from personal experience, most southern African birders use either a copy of the Sasol, Newmans or Roberts.

Kindle version unfriendly

Would never have purchased the kindle version if I knew it was so user unfriendly. Why are there no links from the bird name to the appropriate page? Even if you know exactly what you are looking for, it takes forever to find the information. It is day lite robbery to sell the kindle version, I'll stick to my printed version.

Very pleased with ease

My family and I purchased this book for a trip to South Africa and Zambia last summer. We found it invaluable. Every day, whether on safari, walking through town, or driving along the highway we needed it to identify the most wonderful species of birds. The illustrations and organization were helpful, along with the photo index inside the cover. Our Zulu tour guide on Safari had one as well and said it was the only serious one to use. Memories

This book takes me back more than 55 years, when I ordered by mail, putting dollard bills (or pound sterlings) in an envelope, sending it by mail (where it comes "mail order") and waiting the traditional 6 weeks to get it.

I then went to visit Sharp House in London, may be in 1963, where they were teaching traditional dances.

Together with Child ballads, helped me build a repertoire of 300 songs. I still reacall some.

A pity it's not available as ebook.

If you read music, this electronic version is not for you.

This is a great book but not in the electronic form. The music scores are not scanned but converted to alphabet letters and symbols, and come out as nonsense. I had earlier purchased the reprinted scanned version but the music scores scanned very poorly with missing staff lines, missing notes, etc., so I had to return it. You can read the scanned book on line; don't try to download it to your Kindle: that will not work either.

Overall, the scan is of good quality. In some places it is not the best, but it never interferes with the understanding of the text or music.

The book itself is an excellent resource for anyone looking into Appalachian-English folk songs.

It can happen!

I loved this book. I lost my beloved dog in March. It was totally surreal that she could be gone. She was almost 14 and was extremely gifted, devoted, smart and even became somewhat famous for her musical abilities. I started to notice similar feelings and perceptions like Gail did. In my case I felt compelled to research my dogs pedigree for some reason and found out she was an old time Aussie working dog from a long line of champion working dogs.i never knew this because I had just filed her AKC paper the breeder had given me when she was a pup. It made sense because of how extraordinarily gifted she was. It felt like she was telling me that she wanted to come back but only if she could have the same bloodlines so that those same abilities would be bred in her. . As I continued my research I kept getting more signs and signals along the way pointing me to the way ( how, where , etc.) she is going to come back. I now know she is coming back and soon! Gail had great advice on how to approach this journey and I didn't read her book till after all these things happened but found so many thing she was saying in the book to be true for me. It is real to me that it happens.

Well written and convincing!

I was a bit skeptical at first--not that the dog would reincarnate (I had read evidence of animal reincarnation), but that anyone would care so much about their pet coming back to them! Then I got to page 38, where the author makes a very strong case for the co-evolution of dogs and humans, which has occurred over the past 100,000 years. Dogs, she says, are the only animal that looks into our eyes the same way that humans do! I can't argue that fact. In fact, the author claims to have received 5 million hits when she put "dog reincarnation” into a search engine.

"There are people who say the death of an animal is less traumatic than the death of a human being. But love is love, and when you lose what you love more than anything else in the world, that loss is devastating,” states the author. She was so upset for months that she couldn’t even watch Lifetime for Women movies—that made me laugh, as I just love those movies myself.

But the author’s conviction that her beloved Bao, a Shih Tzu, would come back to her was strong. She even told people about it. “My certainty that Bao was coming back to me wasn’t a delusion or a defense mechanism. It was as real as I am.” I love how the author cites Ian Stevenson, an MD who devoted his life to proving reincarnation, using the scientific method. She gives a few examples of his work in which children recall vivid details of a former life, and have them verified. I agree with the author that animals also reincarnate. Why would it be a privilege only for one species? She cites the tradition that “Shih Tzus in particular have a tradition of returning to live out a second life with a beloved owner.”

The book is very well written and includes an 8-week program of simple things you can do/feel/visualize in order to encourage your own pet to come back to you.

Love the way she writes

Love the way she writes, love the topic and love the result. My beloved dog Lola died almost 2 weeks ago and this book helps a lot with the grieving process and it gives me hope and a light in this darkness i'm currently in!

I bought two of these. One for myself and another for a co-worker. Not only do I receive​ assignments to write sports articles but I edit them as well, this is an essential tool. Even better, I was able to get it on my Kindle! One less research book on my desktop.

To call this a handbook is a joke. That implies it is for professionals working in the field. In reality, it's dumbed down to a junior high level and seems to be written for kids who think they want to be sports writers when they grow up.
That's nice, but I bought the book after making a career change and was hoping to find useful information about my new field. Unfortunately, I found none here.

I transitioned from doing sales to news writing while working for the local paper. It was a big change for me career wise and I have no idea how to write sports events. Reading this books gave me a guideline on how to be a better sports writer. I felt I was back in college all over again learning the basics.

Great reference book. Very insightful.
