Ultimate German Beginner-Intermediate (Coursebook)

I must start off by saying that I have never had a German class, neither at any formal institution nor with a tutor, friend, or the like. Therefore, I cannot judge this text against any formal course of German.
But, I am very interested in learning languages, and have used many textbooks in the past, even some made for use in a school environment. So, I feel that I can give a fairly good critique of this book.
Out of any foreign language textbook I have used, I find that this book is, if not THE best, one of the best I have had the experience of learning a language with. I am self-taught in all of the languages I have been learning, except for three years of Spanish I took in school. Therefore, I know that textbooks need to have certain aspects to be able to be used sufficiently for self-study, and this book has them.
Although there is no CD, many resources can be found online for the pronunciation of German, and the pronunciation notes in the beginning of the book, I find, are very good ones. Therefore, I do not feel that pronunciation should be much of a struggle to learn.
I very much like the structure of the chapters in this book, and find that it works very well for learners. Each chapter begins with a Dialogue or two, and their translation(s). These are not too difficult and not too long or too short, and they are written to be able to be mostly understood based on knowledge from previous chapters. Following the Dialogue, there is a section for Grammar and Structure, which teaches material a reader has not yet learned from a previous chapter. There are then vocabulary lists and exercises, to reinforce the material. By the end of a chapter, a reader should be able to understand the dialogue, or at least almost all of it.
The book also provides review quizzes after every ten chapters, as well as practice readings written like articles one might see in the news or on a blog, et cetera.
Overall, I find that this book is a very good introduction to the German language for anyone interested, whether a student, or just a casual learner such as myself.

Excellent for a German "over-the-counter" course!

The best way to learn german is by living in a German-speaking country. If you can't do that, this course will take you a long way toward proficiency in German. BUT, I would say that the accompanying CD's are a must for the novice. I took 4 years in college, and still read German newspapers on line, but wanted something to brush up. I have used several language courses (Barron's, Pimsleur, Tell Me More, etc.) I would rank this one in the top 2. Somehow, they strike a good balance of natural conversation exposure, phrase-learning, useful vocabulary, grammar, and culture tips. They pack more into their course than most. As far as how advanced you can go with Ultimate German, they do a good job there, too. Normally, passive voice, subjunctive, and other more difficult grammar structures are either not covered by other language courses, or given shallow coverage. The Ultimate German advanced book, and even the beginner-intermediate levels cover these, and in a very natural way...much earlier on than other courses. My library had both sets. I ripped the CD's (legal) and burned them onto discs, as well as put them on my MP3. I then bought just the book on Amazon. That way, I got a great course for pennies on the dollar. I can't imagine that the "new complete course" can do much better, so I went with this last version before they changed over. Glad I did. Viel vergnügen!

It tottaly worth the price

I already read the "The Everything Learning German" (more than twice...) by Ed Swick and I would say that the Swick's book is more didactic and easy to read for a truly beginner, even though I'm still in lesson 11 in the "Ultimate German". There are some points that are said in the "Ultimate German" book that Swick's doesn't covers and vice-versa and appears also that the Swick's is more updated. But anyway, the book is a good "next-step" and a cheap one, you would spend some months to fully study it.

Duff is the President of SEMTAS Corporation and is internationally recognized as a leader in the development of engineering technology for achieving electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) in communication and electronic systems. He has 42 years of experience in electromagnetic interference/electromagnetic vulnerability (EMI/EMV) analysis, test, design, and problem solving for a wide variety of communication and electronic systems. He has written more than 40 technical papers and four books on EMC. He also regularly teaches seminar courses in EMC. He is an IEEE Fellow, Past President of the IEEE EMC Society, and a NARTE Certified EMC Engineer.

Great collection of useful information on difficult subject

There are not many books on EMC design. It is the third book on the subject I could collect during several years.I does really help to better understand the complex thematics. It guides one safely through the EMC comptatible design jungle! Very good book written by a talented writer with great experience (wrote a lot for Don, the EMC design Guru).

Heart-wrenching, amazing and uplifting true stroy.

The Lost Boy is an absolutely amazing true story of Dave Pelzer, which chronicles his years from 12 to 18 years of age as a foster child. This is book two of three and now I must go and read the other two books in the trilogy. I could not put this book down. I would recommend this book to everyone.
This will book will make you cry, it will make you mad, and at the end, you will be cheering and crying tears of joy for Dave. This book will break your heart and if you are a parent, you will be outraged at the abuse. Sadly, child abuse is so prevalent, and there are so many cunning, and devious parents out there, that some children do not get out and the abuse is "allowed" to go on and on or the child is killed.
Dave's strength, determination, and unbreakable spirit shine throughout this book. How he survived the brutality can only be called a miracle. It breaks my heart to read of such incredible abuse and one does have to thank the foster parents, social works and teachers in this child's life. Dave says, "It takes a community to save a child", and I wholeheartedly agree.
Dave takes you through his five different foster families during his adolescent years and his desperate determination to find the love of a family and a "home" propels him by not abandoning hope.
Dave's inner strength, courage, and fortitude are a shining inspiration to us all. God bless you Dave and the work that you are doing to help other children. Thank you for opening our eyes and sharing "your" story.

Will there ever be Justice for abuse?

This book is a sequel to the book, "A Child Called It." Like the first book, this one is also a very emotional experience for the reader. I experienced feelings of anger, sadness, and frustration. The first chapter reveals how the first book ended with the boy being rescued from his abusive mother. The proceeding chapters go in depth of the child's life in foster care and institutions, always in search of a loving family to care for him. Whats frustrating about this particular book, and like the first, is that it never reveals any consequences the abusive mother recieved. In fact, in this sequel, she still tries to get to him and continues to manipulate the system. What's appalling is she is allowed to do this with little or no consequences. I feel this book should be read by everyone in order to make anyone who can make a difference in our society aware of this issue. It's my hope that in the last sequel, it reveals some of the consequences the abuser recieves to put closure to this issue. Thats why, I feel, the reader feels so frustrated and helpless. These are excellent books by Dave Pelzer. I highly recommend them.

Provides insight into the needs of rescued victims of abuse

This book and the previous A CHILD CALLED IT provide an engrossing view of child abuse and the needs of those rescued from its grip. It is most helpful precisely because it comes from the point of view of the child as he is living it rather than from well-meaning experts who look from the outside in. As the guardian of a formerly abused youngster, I was particularly interested in the emotional stages that David went through after his rescue. His skill in expressing his own frustratation with himself and his reactions to those who wanted to help him is extraordinary. His story has helped me to help my own "foster" son and to better understand what he has gone through even though he himself cannot yet explain much of his behavior. I hope he will someday feel comfortable about reading THE LOST BOY and perhaps telling his own story after the wounds of his experience have become less raw. I anxiously await the third book in the series, for I wonder how the final healing has taken place for Mr. Pelzer. What has happened to his parents; did he ever learn why his mother behaved as she did? How has he learned to parent his own child in the absence of a proper example in his childhood? I think the answers to these questions might show the way for many like him who are even now struggling not to survive, or to find a family, but to heal.

This is a book that is clearly aimed at a specific business vertical, yet in many ways a lot of the advice can be transferred into other areas with a smidgeon of imagination.

This reviewer’s first impression was to wonder WHY the construction industry would need its own special book, as surely moving bits and pieces around for builders and other trades is hardly unique. There can be issues moving a lorry-load of glass, of course, but then moving highly corrosive chemicals around the world is manageable too; it is just a matter of technique and procedure. Yet boy, was one wrong! There are some subtle differences that can be found within the construction industry’s use of logistics (not all participants are even clued-up but when they’ve seen this book…) and these could possibly be implemented within many other sectors.

So this book became a great little read, a surprising source of knowledge that one never imagined would be of importance – even for someone who has no immediate plans to work within the construction industry in any function. Some of the chapters give a lot of food for thought, such as the use of returnable packaging and off-site product manufacture and assembly. It clearly has the potential to be the book you didn’t think you needed but are a lot more inspired and informed about as a result of it. The price is a little bit on the high side for a speculative purchase, even though the potential savings for your enterprise could be clearly much higher.

One had not considered that even the larger house builders might not have that much purchasing power for many products, when they “only” build 10,000 buildings a year and their delivery address can be the entire country. So every small saving and efficiency within the supply chain can be important, as well as ensuring that production continues unabated. The author puts forward some interesting ideas for creative thinking that might, on first glance, be counterintuitive, yet in the real world could offer up a sizeable saving. You will have to read the book to discover that knowledge and other things that may have you going “duh…” when you realise the apparently obvious things you may be overlooking.

That’s about it. An unexpected, positive surprise in other words. If you have any input to the supply chain or purchasing function, in any industry, this book might be capable of improving your company’s bottom line.

Stresses the importance of timing and effieciency in logistics and supply chain

However, there can also be increased risk if the strengths and weaknesses of the third party companies are not fully understood and managed.” (p. 78)

Supply Chain Management & Logistics in Construction: Delivering Tomorrow’s Built Environment (Kogan Page 2015) contains the collective knowledge of seventeen highly qualified contributors representing a number of roles within the industry – including its suppliers. Greger Lungesjö, listed as the book’s author, serves a double role as contributor and editor.

It is important to clarify that logistics has a different meaning in the construction industry than it does in others. Logistics is the term used to describe the movement of materials, people, and supporting services around a project site – not getting the materials, equipment, and people to the building site. You might even think of logistics as the ‘indirect spend’ of a construction site/project. It is absolutely critical, but it does not become part of the final structure. Fear not however, supply chain is still supply chain – an area of investment from which the industry is just starting to realize the potential for benefit.

In their effort to improve supply chain management, the construction industry has looked primarily to manufacturing and retail for leadership. But the project-oriented nature of construction, as well as the role of sub-contractors who divide both risks and costs among themselves, adds to the complexity and makes the needs of construction unique.

Whether you know construction as a primary activity or a sourced one, it is a critical contributor to any national economy as measured by percent of GDP, job creation, or gross value. Broad trends such as urbanization, sustainability, data modeling, and just in time management have major impacts on construction projects.

The four sections of the book break the chapters down as follows:
- Strategic Perspectives (chapters 1-5) – Note: Anyone with a more traditional supply chain perspective serving or working in the construction industry is likely to get the fastest value from chapters 4 and 5 which address supply chain management in general and then, more specifically, risk considerations.
- The Impact of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and New Data Management Capabilities (chapter 6)
- Construction Logistics and Sustainability (chapters 7-8)
- Logistics Operations (9-13)

One of the most undeniable takeaways from the book is the importance of timing: both in logistics and supply chain. Connecting the two efforts better for the sake of efficiency will require a focus on throughput (think about the limited mechanisms for moving materials) and storage (particularly in urban settings) constraints. Materials, people, and equipment must be available when needed, but not a second too soon or a minute too late. Efforts to incorporate prefabrication have relieved some of the strain of site logistics, but only to a certain extent. 3PLs are underutilized, according to the contributors, and are an area of significant future potential.

Although there is some case study content, it is ‘anonymous’ and generalized in terms of numbers, which is too bad. That being said, it is better to have that information included than not.

In a more general connection to our supply chain management coverage, suppliers and providers are playing an increasing role in project delivery and completion. We are familiar with the general contractor vs. subcontractor construction management approach, but that does not mean that the balance of labor and oversight has stayed the same. And as we well know, the more risk, responsibility, and cost is tied up in those subcontractors, the more important the process for selecting them. Any procurement professional can relate to that.

LOVED IT!

Wow. I can not say enough good things about this book. First, I love the way it is written, with the great teachings in each chapter and an activation after each teaching. The subject matter is awesome, because our God is Awesome. The "Dark Cloud" chapter wrecked me, had me crying for a long time on that one. I found real answers and solutions to issues. Thank you Ian Clayton for this book!! I loved it.

I loved learning more about how to get closer to God. People who are interested in growing spiritually and want to understand the realms of God's Kingdom will be lead into revelation and activation. You can't learn what is in this book in church. You may already be having encounters with the Father, Son Jesus and Holy Spirit, this book will confirm what is true and fear of the unknown will be confronted.
