Useful as a reference, not as a book to learn from

I agree with Van Denburg's evaluation.
I am a graduate student in Psychology, and I find the Hays text mostly illegible. His prose is dense and his explanations rely very heavily on mathematical formulae instead of real-world or logical/verbal descriptions. Furthermore, he falls into the typical "math textbook" pit of giving solutions to only the example problems that are exceptions to what one would usually encounter.
This is especially bad considering that my concentration specializes in statistical inference, and I've studied mathematics through differential equations (including linear algebra, multivariate).
Worse, Hays has a tendency to use different symbols to represent variables compared to other statistical texts (and in some cases, the rest of the world!)
Lastly, the tables that Hays has in the back of his book are not notated. He does not explain what each table represents, or what the x or y axis are. In one case, he has two entries for each lookup in the ANOVA Power of Association (omega squared) (Table XII, page 1032). Nowhere in the table does it mention what these two values are for.
It is only in one paragraph 600 pages earlier, that he explains that the two values are for alpha=0.05 and 0.01 and that n must be equal for both groups!! (page 410)
I am currently relying on several other texts to understand statistics for the social/behaviourial sciences. If you are extremely comfortable with mathematics to describe your behaviourial tests, you may find this book valuable. If you prefer a more descriptive approach, I suggest another one.

Invaluable reference; Not for pleasure reading

Hays's text is not meant for everyone; hence the mixed reviews. It was not the primary source from which I gained my knowledge of statistics; however it serves as an invaluable reference. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I had little difficulty understanding the material as Hays presented it. Some of the criticisms are points well-taken; for example a lack of annotation in the power tables at the end of the book (which are still decipherable if you know what you're looking at).
This text is for the mathematically inclined-it is not a "how-to" book, rather a "why" book that thoroughly explains the theory behind a variety of popular inferential techniques. If this is the sort of knowledge you are seeking, Hays is the book for you. If you are interested in a more "common-sense" or applied approach, perhaps you should look elsewhere.

Masterpiece

This text is a true CLASSIC in the field of statistics. It is unique, extremely well-written, and a book you will return to time after time if you are serious about learning and understanding statistics. Hays' unique style is such that in his explanations, he takes you a step back, then two steps forward. While it can be said that some writers on statistics don't really understand the subject themselves (which makes it almost impossible to learn from them), this is definitely not the case with Hays's text. Hays' grasp of statistics is unmatched.

About the Author
Brian Astbury founded and ran South Africa's first non-racial theatre/arts venue, The Space, in the 70's, where he commissioned internationally famous plays like Sizwe Banzi is dead, The Island and Statements after an arrest under the Immorality Act from playwrights like Athol Fugard, Pieter-Dirk Uys, Geraldine Aron and Fatima Dike, South Africa's first black woman playwright. Many of the 'graduates' of The Space have gone on to become mainstays of the post-Apartheid South African theatre, TV and film scene. At The Space he began his career as a director. In the 80's he moved to London when his wife, South Africa's greatest actress, Yvonne Bryceland, joined the National Theatre Company. Here he began to teach - first at LAMDA, then, in the 90's at Mountview, where he was Head of Acting, Directing and Musical Theatre Courses. In 2003 he moved to E15 where he set up the Contemporary Theatre Practice course to teach actors, directors and writers the arts of survival through production of their own material. Later he headed the MA in Professional Theatre for Writers and Directors, before retiring in 2008. Over the years Astbury has formulated the techniques for training actors, writers and directors described in Trusting the Actor in collaboration with students and professional actors. Many of these techniques have their basis in the use of energy and emotion to free the practitioner's imagination, allowing actors to understand and be able to access the mysterious state known as 'being in the moment'. He has also developed methods of accessing and freeing the imagination of writers through the use of mind-mapping and image-streaming. He has done workshops on these techniques at the Young Vic, the National Theatre Studio, the London Playwrights Collective among others.

a must read!

For the last 10 years, I couldn't name a recent book that would have brought a fresh perspective to the actor's craft. The ones worth reading were from past decades, from Stanislavsky to Viola Spolin, from Meisner to Eric Morris.
Until I came across Brian Astbury's book - Trusting the Actor, published in 2011.
What a hidden gem this is.
Brian Astbury is a South-African theatre director who developed a unique approach to acting while working as an acting teacher in the UK.
This approach can be (perhaps unhelpfully?) described as anti-Stanislavsky - he stirrs away from analyzing the text and tries to get the actor's "right-side of the brain" engaged in the process, turning the performance into something alive and instinctive.

The first half of the book retraces his professional career and life, with a good dose of personality and wit, while pinpointing the biggest dilemmas faced by actors. The second half outlines the exercises that Brian teaches. Best of all, he names his sources (current findings from neuroscientists like Antonio Damasio and Joseph LeDoux, for instance), explains his reasoning, and is brave/humble enough to admit mistakes and lessons learned along the way.
Beyond mixing theory with practice, there's so much passion in his writing... it makes for such a compelling read and a real inspiration to anyone who is taking first steps towards the profession.

On a side note, this approach -or something very close to it- has been practiced by Brazilian acting coaches like Fatima Toledo in Brazil's film industry, leading to a visceral acting that has drawn a lot of attention in films like Central Station, City of God, Lower City, Elite Squad, among others. So if you're curious to see what this technique can lead to, it's worth taking a look at the films mentioned.

Finally. An accessible, unpretentious and immediately applicable piece of practical advice about Acting, Directing, Life & What to do about it.

Do you ever wish you could take a friend, teacher or icon, fold them up and put them in your pocket for inspiration, support or just plain company? Well, ladies and gentlemen, here it is: a perfectly portable Brian Astbury! As my mentor and friend, I've often wanted to zap to the UK, wander into his favourite caf and simply listen. Now, in the absence of zapping, I simply open my Kindle (what an invention!) and read.

This book is an absolute must in the tool bag of any modern day theatre professional and an interesting read for those interested in emotional and social behaviour. The book strikes a perfect balance between theory and practice, covering a range of exercises, techniques and methods, and substantiating them with a range of funny and moving memories from Astbury's intriguing life.

Mostly, I've found this book hugely inspiring as an actor and director.

Inspirational

This book contains some of the most inspirational and practical information for actors, directors and writers that I've ever encountered. While I have found other theatre books to be though provoking, none of them have stirred me to pick up a pen and start writing immediately the way this one has. I had the privilege of spending several months studying with Brian in college during a particularly stimulating and formative time. Reading the book took me back to the feelings and impulses I remember having at that time but also drove me forward to new creative endeavors. I am thrilled to now have a means of listening to Brian whenever I find myself stuck creatively, by simply opening the book and reading his words.

About the Author
Helena Earnshaw has collaborated with her sister on an observational documentary series which exposed the issue of rural homelessness and heroin addiction. Described by Ken Loach as “an important social document” and referred to in Parliament, it went on to win many awards. She has been named BAFTA Wales Best Newcomer of the Year. She was also the subject of a Welsh documentary about the antiglobalization movement. She has written for a number of publications, including the Guardian, Mslexia, New Internationalist and New Welsh Review. In 2011 she won a Literature Wales bursary to work on her debut novel and she has been shortlisted for the Observer Young Travel Writer of the Year award.

Gripping and inspiring!

An amazing book about courage and humanity. Skillfully written. You can tell the authors came to know and admire the women they interviewed. The stories are gripping, and reading the interviews you feel you come to know these women, they take you in, you identify intimately with their motivation and force, even if you haven't gone through their experiences. You leave the book feeling inspired to do something, to be part of something, to fight for social and gender justice. Most of all, you feel grateful and hopeful to share the world with these women.

LaCapra tests the assumptions and implications of the way one approaches the past by looking to psychoanalysis to render more self-aware the relationship between the historian and his or her material. He offers criticisms of assumptions held by practicing historians and theorists, placing the study of history at the center of a larger argument about the role of the contemporary university.

Contesting both corporatization and claims that the university is in ruins, LaCapra writes, "It is paradoxical that the demand to make the university conform to an ever-increasing extent to a market or business model seems oblivious to the fact that the American university has probably been the most successful of its type in the world, that students from other countries disproportionately desire to study in it."

Are Historians Averse to Theory?

According to Dominick LaCapra, historians should spend more time engaging with "theory", defined as "an attempt to understand better what one knows or thinks one know."

His own research on the genocide and post-traumatic experience makes use of concepts borrowed from psychoanalysis. As an example, he refers to transference as "the tendency to repeat in one's own discourse or practice tendencies active in, or projected into, the other or object", such as a ritualistic response to ritual or a fanatical denunciation of religious fanaticism. Or to use another trope, he differentiates between "working through", the positive engagement with trauma that can lead to its ultimate resolution, and "acting out" or compulsively repeating the past.

Engaging with theory also means acquiring a familiar acquaintance with contemporary philosophical texts. This is not an easy task: as the author points out, "one cannot competently read Derrida without having read Freud, Heidegger, Hegel, Husserl, Plato, Aristotle, and quite a few others." Fortunately, younger historians can rely on the work of their predecessors who established bridges between theory and historiography. Besides, according to Dominick LaCapra, the "golden age" of critical theory is now over, and modern authors such as Giorgio Agamben, whose Remnants of Auschwitz: The Witness and the Archive is discussed in one chapter, exhibit a disturbing tendency to move "from high theory to sky-high theory", losing relevance and applicability along the way.

What puzzles me with this book is the aggressiveness of the tone the author uses when discussing authors with whom he disagrees. To take an example with which I am familiar, Dominick LaCapra refers twice to Gerard Noiriel's Sur la "crise" de l'histoire in disparaging terms, accusing him of protecting the French-born Ecole des Annales against foreign and particularly American influences, or even of moving into a direction "in which leftist and neoconservative tendencies may converge." The fact that Noiriel dedicates a chapter to a close discussion of a volume that the author edited two decades ago is not even mentioned, and the detailed critiques formulated by the French historian are left unanswered.

More generally, LaCapra makes a generous use of political labels when discussing academic disciplines and research fields, and he tends to evaluate scholarly contributions through the sole prism of the progressive/reactionary dichotomy ("Moving beyond theory is a specious and even sociopolitically and ethically suspect move", "Analytic philosophy and history are more theoretically conservative than literary criticism"). The bellicose tone and political labeling are serious limits to an otherwise well-written and thoughtful essay.

Dr. V. Sridhar obtained his B.E. from University of Mysore in Electronics and Communication Engineering, M.E. (Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering) from Jadavpur University, Calcutta and Ph.D from Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. He carried out his Post Doctoral Research at Dept. of Electrical and Electronics, University Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia. Dr. Sridhar has been working as a Principal of PES College of Engineering for last 4 years and has been associated with this Institute since 1980, from beginning of his career. His fields of interest include VLSI Design, Digital Signal Processing, Bio-medical Engineering & Instrumentation and Cognitive studies, Computer and Mobile communications. He was also the Registrar (Evaluation) at Visweswaraya Technological University, Belgaum. He has presented and published many papers in National and International peer-reviewed journals and conferences. He has also been a guiding force for M.Sc and Ph.D students. He is instrumental in establishing a CAD Center for VLSI Design as Center of Excellence at the Institution. He is a life member of IEEE (M), IETE (F), ISTE (M), and BMSI (M) and has participated in various national and international conferences.

Dr. H.S. Sheshadri completed his B.E. in Electronics and Communication Engineering from University of Mysore, M.E. in Applied Electronics from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and Ph.D from Anna University, Chennai. Dr. Sheshadri is currently working as a Professor with Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering in PES College of Engineering, Mandya and has been serving this institution since 1982.
