Excellent Book

The author, his real name is Warren Kenton, seems to come from the practical Kabbalah side of this tradition. However, the book is well written and internally coherent and I feel that he puts forth his point of view well in both a theoretical manner and as an experientially based guide. His interpretation of the tree of life and its relationship to the four worlds and the ability of humans to move their focus of attention up and down is an outstanding original contribution. Beats the heck out of the biopsychosocial model used in medicine and is generalizable to many personality types found in the world. It really provides an elegant and cohesive understanding of the states of consciousness that are not in the standard ego mode. This model can be used as a wonderful teaching aid to those who are aware of their spiritual self but are too bogged down in society or bad previous religious experiences to understand non-ego states of being.

The experiential meditation examples are very welcome and helpful, but are not really as well linked into a fabric of understanding. Its kind of like getting a calculus book with a great problem example solution from chapter 15. It is good but where is the context?

Additionaly missing from this author is the sense of historicity, holiness, dangerousness and submission to God's will that must be part and parcel of this work. For this aspect, I would read Aryeh Kaplan's Meditation and Kabbalah.

5+ rarity

Halevi has written quite a few introductory level books on Kabbalah which are highly recommended for their conciseness and clarity. This is NOT one of them. Of the dozen of his books I've read, I'd rate this my favorite. Probably because it's one of the most advanced. The other advanced (and more practical in the generic sense) is "School of Kabbalah"). Halevi is a practicing Kabbalist, as opposed to Kabbalistic historians such as Gershom Scholem. Each has his/her place. I'd recommend a sound grounding in Kabbalah before tackling this book. Read some Scholem and some of Halevi's other works first. This is a fine book which includes exercises and visualizations appropriate to the aspiring Kabbalist. It is somewhat reminiscent of "The Shining Paths" by Ashcroft-Nowicki but, perhaps a bit more down to earth. Advanced mystics know that one has to keep one's feet on the ground while one's head is in the clouds. Halevi has his sights set. As he stated in "Introduction to the Cabala" (or the "Tree of Life"), Samuel Weiser, York Beach, ME 1972/1991 p.202, "The rabbis have said that the reason for Existence is that it acts as a vast mirror of contemplation by which God may behold God...the Holy One beholds the Holy One through our experience." Tread the Path, but tread it carefully.

A very inspiring book

The first book of Halevi's that I read was *School of the Soul: Its Path and Pitfalls*, which he published several years after this book. *School of the Soul* describes the development of spiritual groups, while *The Work of the Kabbalist* focuses more on the individual.
People who have heard of (or experienced) the Kabbalah as a strictly Jewish path full of precise rules will find this book refreshing (or perhaps shocking). Although Halevi provides several detailed diagrams based on the traditional Etz Chaim (tree of life), he also devotes a large portion of the text to exercises that seem primarily imaginative.
A key theme in Halevi's books is the awareness that Kabbalah is a living tradition which must adapt to changing circumstances. This flexibility dovetails with his inclusive, welcoming attitude to readers who belong to traditions other than Judaism.
From the outset, the reader will recognize that this book is rooted in many years of personal experience as both student and teacher. Halevi's wisdom and compassion shine through in every chapter, but each reader will naturally find "good parts" that resonate with his or her individual perspective.
I take the liberty of quoting a paragraph from his chapter on Integrity:
"The practice of integrity is vital to a spiritual tradition, for it not only safeguards the individual, but the Work. Over the last few centuries Kabbalistic ideas have been stolen and adulterated by those who only sought magical powers, with the result that an image of dangerous hotchpotch has overlaid the real purpose of Kabbalah. Because of this, the tradition has fallen into disrepute amongst Jews who see it as a degenerate form of occultism. Thus, by the last century the reputation of Kabbalah had fallen from high respect during its most original period in Medieval times to a superstitious repetition of magical formulae. This happened because the Work was not protected in the right way. It is not secrecy that guards the tradition, but correct conduct, and if this is not present, then people do not find the door to the inner path which is their birthright. The lack of real spirituality today amongst clergy has made many Jews and Christians turn to the Eastern religions for their esoteric instruction. This is sad because they have within their own Western traditions all the higher knowledge and methods they need for the development of the Occidental psyche and spirituality."

Elegant and enjoyable

I'd recommend A Heart for Milton to anyone who enjoyed North & South, starring the delectable Richard Armitage as John Thornton and Daniela Denby-Ashe as Margaret Hale. When that mini-series finished, there followed a huge clamour among its many fans for continuation stories, prequels, sequels... Almost every variation of John and Margaret's romance has appeared since but this is one of the best.

It's worth noting that A Heart for Milton starts well before the end of Gaskell's classic novel; here the path the plot takes after Margaret's parents have died is altered slightly, as is the ending. However, neither of these deviations were a problem for me as they were well worked. I really enjoyed the writing style - it was elegant, fluent and in-keeping with the tone of Gaskell's novel. There are plenty of love scenes, but while these are passionate they are also tastefully done, and crafted in an appropriate style.

If you are looking for more of John Thornton and North and South, and prefer the language, style and any love scenes to reflect genuine affection and respect for the spirit of Gaskell's original classic, and the BBC mini series, then A Heart for Milton fits the bill perfectly!

LOVED it!

Loved this so much, I read it twice within 2 weeks. A few thoughts:
-Margaret's willingness to 'come around' to John so soon after her father's death may have been a bit abrupt. Might have been nice to see her 'discover' her love for John a little more developed.
-Loved how Helstone was shared with John and how it became a special place to them both.
-I could 'see' Richard Armitage as the John in the story (not Daniella as much)
-Insight into the struggle and lonliness of John before Margaret was contrasted nicely to the joy John discovers through Margaret.
-Seeing john become child-like and playful as introduced to the simple things of life was touching.
-Had a VERY hard time putting it down...even the second time!

Things you might want to know:
-It was pretty sappy at times (but I enjoyed the sap!)
-Rated R--for 1 chapter in particular. References (without explicit detail)to their love life was fairly frequent. The honeymoon chapter was detailed but in a very sweet, innocent way.

LOVED IT!!!

At first I was not sure if I would like this book since a different twist was put on Margaret Hale leaving Milton right after her father passes away, but as I continued reading I loved it. People reading this book and comparing it to North & South must remember that Elizabeth Gaskell was rushed to finish her book. I think that explains the way she ended it. One also must remember that when Elizabeth Gaskell wrote North & South authors simply did not include scenes of making love. I think that if Elizabeth Gaskell was writing North & South today instead she would include tastefull romance scenes. The ending of A Heart for Milton brought tears to my eyes. It was nice to see the legacy of the intense love that John Thornton and Margaret Hale shared live on in their children and their children's children. Thank you Trudy Brasure. BBC please continue this story on film!!! I want more of Richard Armitage & Daniela Denby-Ashe as John Thornton and Margaret Hale.

Completely non-European paradigms of financing, transportation, societal norms, and creating wealth.

I totally disagree with the first reviewer. This is a fine book, on a time and place that few people know much about, which makes it important. Obviously well researched, it is also well written. No, of course it's not a novel! Whoever said it was? It's a study in Islamic capitalism at about the time of Shakespeare, when Europe had gotten started on capitalism, but had not yet attained its breakthrough to industrial production and marketing. We know much more about European mercantilism than we do about that of the Middle East. This pioneering book helps fill the gap, and does so by focusing on a single individual merchant, operating under completely non-European paradigms of financing, transportation, societal norms, and creating wealth.
The book could in some ways be read as a novel, since it is about one person in a strange society, and in my view this simply shows what a good book it is. When you can even imagine a historical work as a story, then the author has done a good job. If you want a vision of what a non-European model of trade might be, this book will help you attain that.

Not entirely engaging, but informative

This book describes the life of a merchant (Abu Taqiyya) and some details about his family. You see how he traded, where he traveled, how he negotiated, etc. Also, you see how his family was affected by Abu's merchant lifestyle. It's informative cultural history. But, it's a little slow.
The details sometimes get a little too detailed. It's not a sweeping novel, by any means. This was written by a scholar, so expect to see more detail and analyzation than you would in say, a historical fiction novel.
The book does its job -- teaching you about merchant culture in 17th century middle east. It's just not a "fun" book compared to most.

A wonderful supplement to primary theory readings

For some years I have used this book, in a number of its editions, as one of the texts in my college upper-division literary theory class. Each edition is better and more inclusive than the last. Selden sorts out literary theory into its logical categories (New Criticism, structuralism, poststructuralism, cultural theories). Chapters provide useful, clearly written, and accurate summaries of fields/schools/movements and brief summaries of the works and contributions of major theorists in each. The book works particularly well in a twentieth-century theory class in conjunction with a reader in primary theory, such as the wonderful Norton Anthology of Critical Theory (first published in 2001) and a glossary of critical terms (such as the terrifically useful Oxford Dictionary of Literary Theory). My students consistently end up liking Selden's book; they usually comment on how clearly it lays out major ideas in each theoretical camp and how it helps them to read the difficult primary texts by powerhouses such as Marx, Derrida, Foucault, Cixous. The companion reader is ok, but not as useful as this summary of theoretical positions.

Excellent intro to literary theory

This book is a must for any student of literature. It gives a brief but always clear description of all the major theories of contemporary criticism (except the myth criticism of Frye and Jung, which prevents my giving the book a five). Topics covered include New Criticism, Marxism, Russian Formalism, Structuralism, Poststructuralism, Psychoanalysis, New Historicism, Cultural Materialism, Feminism, Post-Colonialism, and Queer Theory. A study of these theories will help any student increase their appreciation for and understanding of literature and literary theory. The book, however, only covers the theories in their theoretical context and not in their practical applications to literature. That is covered in the companion book A Reader's Guide. The theories are covered in relation to the major theorists behind them (Leavis, Bakhtin, Todorov, Derrida, DeMan, Barthes, Lacan, Kristeva, Foucault, etc.)

great to return to again and again for insight
By skeptical of both sides
It is easy to fault any discussion of literary theory for being unclear or full of jargon. This book is clear in its explanations, and is as unbiased as it gets, given the subject and terminology. We should not confuse a subject full of obscurities and difficulties with the book that tries to explain them. This book is very basic and simple, (although it could seem difficult for a beginner), but I've found that literary theory takes a long time to really understand and there are many texts that one should know if one is to read widely in the subject. This book has been great to return to at various stages of my understanding and reading over the years. An indispensable, basic tool.

Wow!!! This is an amazing book for anyone serious about investing or considering investing in Biotech Stocks.

Download a Kindle sample to review a decent amount of pages detailing analysis of some of the 186 Biotech Companies covered, starting with the letter "a" up to the point of ARDX; snapshot details of IPO date, Number of Shares issued, Partnerships, Board of Directors Bloodline details, Pipeline, Focus & Catalysts. Status of test Phase progress & Phase approval timelines.

In 7 bullet points of the Introduction, Jim Cramer details the focal points of analysis, which include Financials, EBITDA, Revenues, Cash Flows, Long-Term Debt, Percentage of top share holders & Institutional Ownership. I utilize a similar strategy for my analysis ideas and this pretty much nails it.

Publish date November 17, 2015, not yet dated, as company fundamentals quickly change and at times new products are added to company pipelines. The research contained is a great place to start.

Investing in Biotechs is risky & requires regular maintenance/monitoring, due to constant changes in the field, though as long as you invest in companies capable of upholding a strong base of generating revenue & cash flow outweighing their R&D expenditures, have an established line of FDA approved products and continue to steadily build/grow their product pipeline, by establishing successful upcoming Phase III approvals, solidity may be maintained & would naturally follow for the long term.

Very well researched and detailed. Two thumbs up.
