Final rescue

I bought this book in error, thinking it was the same as the 556-page Final Report based on the work of the Oklahoma Bombing Investigation Committee, and funded by private citizens.

But this volume was written by city rescue officials in Oklahoma City. It focuses on the heroic rescue operations conducted afterward, in minute detail.

To its credit, the book gives a huge amount of information about effects of the explosion, the number of people trapped inside, the number of people rescued, by what time and date, the locations and numbers of rescuers, and so on. This will be useful and interesting to anyone honoring those who risked their lives to save others.

This book is valuable in its own right. It honors the dead, and those who worked to save the living. It's certainly a good companion to Key's Final Report. It's also useful for readers interested in coordinating data available on the attack.

But it doesn't examine questions about perpetrators, motives, and investigations concerning the attacks, all of which still need a lot more answers.

About the Author

Andrew Cooksy is a chemistry professor at San Diego State University, where he teaches courses in physical and general chemistry and carries out research on the spectroscopy, kinetics, and computational chemistry of reactive intermediates in combustion and interstellar processes. He attended the Washington, D.C. public schools before receiving his undergraduate degree in chemistry and physics from Harvard College and his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California at Berkeley.

A great book for any level

Very well written book. The review of Calculus in the first chapter is very helpful for those of us who have not taken a math course in at least 6 years. Each chapter starts with a review of topics previously covered, and then introduces the new topic. There are many worked out examples throughout the chapters, as well as sample experiments. This is a great book for someone who has some physical chemistry knowledge and wants to learn Thermodynamics.

Fast paced/rigorous

As a student this book is tricky. I feel the need to use other resources to understand the full picture. Cooksy vomits up some important quantum mechanical equations early on in the text with little context to build up stat. mech.; understandable for making a case for how grasp the macroscopic due to the microscopic canonical ensemble but nevertheless infuriating for a student new to physical chemistry and quantum mechanics.

I learned a lot!

In Brighter Brains, Hank Pellissier has brought together a lot of useful information about the brain that most people just don't know. The book is filled with many great ideas on how to improve and hurt IQ. In the age where neuroscience has discovered the plasticity of our brains, a book like this is important and fascinating reading.

The book is informative but it could have been better. It has some good information but its lacking a clear description about how to increase your IQ. It is like a research paper on IQ, I wouldn't call it a real book. Anyway for the price, you can't beat the info. Hope that helps.

About the Author
Michael D. Whinston is the Robert E. and Emily H. King Professor of Business Institutions in the Department of Economics at Northwestern University. He also holds appointments at Northwestern’s School of Law and its Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Whinston received his B.S. and M.B.A. from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. from M.I.T. He taught at Harvard from 1984 to 1997 before moving to Northwestern. His research has covered a variety of topics in microeconomics, including game theory, the design of contracts and organizations, fi rm behaviour in oligopolistic markets, antitrust, and law and economics. He has also conducted empirical research on the airline and pharmaceutical industries, and served as a consultant―for private parties, the government, and the courts―in various antitrust cases. Whinston is a co-author of the leading graduate textbook in microeconomics, Microeconomic Theory (Oxford University Press, 1995), and is also the author of Lectures on Antitrust Economics (MIT Press, 2006). He and Bernheim have collaborated since 1983, and are excited about this opportunity to produce an innovative new microeconomics text for undergraduates.

B. Douglas Bernheim graduated with an A.B. in Economics from Harvard University, summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, in 1979. He entered graduate study at M.I.T. under a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship and completed his Ph.D. three years later. He began his academic career at Stanford University and taught there from 1982 to 1987. He left Stanford in 1988 to assume an endowed chair in the Department of Finance at Northwestern University’s J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management. In 1990 he moved to Princeton University, where he held an endowed chair in the Department of Economics and also served as the co-director of the Center for Economic Policy Studies. He returned to Stanford in 1994 and is now the Edward Ames Edmonds Professor of Economics. Professor Bernheim’s work has spanned a number of fields, including public economics, political economy, game theory, contract theory, behavioural economics, industrial organization, and financial economics. He is a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, a Senior Fellow of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR), and co-director of SIEPR’s Tax and Budget Policy Program. He is also a former director of the Stanford Institute for Theoretical Economics and co-editor of the American Economic Review. Professor Bernheim’s teaching has included principles of economics, intermediate microeconomics, public economics, microeconomic theory, industrial organization, behavioural economics, and insurance and risk management.

Horrible to read. This book is difficult to understand and the problems are confusing. I am pretty comfortable with Microeconomics, but this book is not clear at all. Wouldn't recommend, if you have an option!

Highly NOT Recommended

This book seeks to distinguish itself in a manner that does not benefit anyone aiming to learn from it. I do not recommend this book in the least.

1. In its effort to be different, it has managed to butcher the ideal learning sequence. It was a horrendous decision to organize the chapters the way they did.The concepts that should have been grouped together are scattered throughout the book in a haphazard manner. It requires one to reference sections of very many different chapters to fully understand a concept.

2. It seeks to give age-old economic terms a new twist by renaming them. This gives rise to extreme frustration since it confuses one and does not tie in with previous or future learnings within the subject of economics.

3. The graphs/charts are not always properly referenced or explained. An example to illustrate a concept sometimes uses a graph from many pages before it, and unless one has read the chapter from the start, one will not be able to understand what is going on. It is therefore a grossly difficult book to use unless you are dedicated to reading every single page.

Moonstone, which has published two collections of short stories and an original novel featuring journalist/supernatural sleuth Carl Kolchak, has reissued the two 1970s novels, in one of which he made his debut. The first, The Night Stalker, chronicles the Las Vegas reporter's first brush with the otherworldly, as his probe into a series of murders convinces him that an actual vampire is responsible. His theorizing, predictably, runs afoul of the local authorities, who seem more concerned with the risk to the tourist trade than solving the crimes. Kolchak's acerbic and cynical first-person narration is engaging, and the action is fast-paced. The second novel, The Night Strangler, which Kolchak creator Rice actually adapted from a Richard Matheson teleplay, is derivative of the first. The venue is now Seattle, but Kolchak, along with most of his supporting cast from Las Vegas, is again butting heads with his superiors and the police as he attempts to track down a killer draining blood from young women. Fans of the cult TV series starring Darren McGavin, as well as its better known successors like "The X-Files," should enjoy the author's blend of horror and humor.

Needed a proofreader

As soon as I heard that the Kolchak novels were back in print I ordered them. I have been a Nightstalker and Kolchak fan since I was a kid and enjoyed both of these novels, but I could only give this edition three stars because of so many typos. It looks like nobody proofread it before it was published. They must have used a spellcheck on it because the mistakes were spelled correctly, they were just the wrong word, or a word was left out. The mistakes were very distracting and I would catch myself looking for the next mistake instead of just enjoying the book. I don't know if I will be willing to buy another book published by Moonstone.

This edition combines the two early short novels by Jeff Rice, the "Night Stalker" and the "Night Strangler". The book is a worthy read and quite entertaining, even though it may tend to veer off a little too far to describe what Kolchak has for dinner or his cover-up gripes (a common theme for our hero).
That being said, the story of a vampire in 1970 Las Vegas is filled with mood and puts the reader firmly in the time and place of Kolchak's journal, and the action is well written and well paced.
Moonstone books have carved a great niche by reviving great pulpy characters from the past such as the Spider, the Phantom and Carl Kolchak,and their library is worth checking out. My two main complaints about this edition though, are the abundance of typos throughout the book as well as the cover design and finish, which are good but do not match the other Kolchak collections by the same publisher, so this edition will not look as good next to it's cousins on your bookshelf.

A heartfelt review of "British Invasion" bands both familiar and utterly obscure

An unusual picture book about the "British invasion" era, featuring acts as well-known as the Beatles, down to many that no one this side of the Pond is likely to have heard of. Particular emphasis is placed on "family tree" connections - meaning you will learn that some of your favorite artists gigged with people you will not have known about (example: the peripatetic career of Rod Stewart). Not sure what rules, if any, were applied in the selection process; the book seems mostly a labour (since it's from the UK) of love. This adds to its funky charm, but encyclopedic it isn't. Great fun for fans of the genre.

AN EXCITING BOOK MORE BRITISH INVASION LISTENERS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT

I know this book has been reviewed in years past, but its such a great book that I thought, in my own limited way, I might bring it to the attention of music listeners who were (and still are) enthralled (like me) with the music coming out of England in the 60's.

In 200 + pages, this wonderful large size book tells the story of well known, and most importantly, the relatively unknown groups who were part of the "British Invasion". And while the book doesn't cover every single artist/group, there's many names that aren't familiar to most listeners, unless you're a very deep collector of this music. The necessary limitation of when to stop on this timeline brings this era (and the music) into sharper focus. Groups like JETHRO TULL, YES, etc. aren't included simply because their music doesn't fall under the category of "beat" music. And while some readers may grumble about the omission of a particular group/artist, it helps bring into focus the groups that are here, and the book is stronger for it.

This book, from front cover to back, is jammed with hundreds of b&w and color photos, graphics, record label reproductions, and concert hand-bills and posters. Combined with information on each artist/group, makes this great book indispensable for listeners (like myself) who want to know something about groups just outside THE BEATLES/ROLLING STONES/LED ZEPPELIN information we all know by now.

The groups are listed alphabetically, starting with A BAND OF ANGELS and ending with THE ZOMBIES. In between are relatively unknown groups such as THE ACTION (a personal favorite), THE BIRDS (another great group), CHERRY SMASH, THE DIMPLES, THE MERSEYS, THE "N" BETWEENS, THE PUSSYFOOT, THE SONS OF FRED, TINTERN ABBEY, THE UGLYS, and WIMPLE WITCH. And this is only a cursory list just flipping through the book. Combine those groups with THE BEATLES, THE WHO, THE MOVE, PROCOL HARUM, FLEETWOOD MAC, FAMILY, Donovan, David Bowie, and THE PRETTY THINGS, and many others, and this book pretty much covers the era. This book gives the reader the advantage of reading it cover to cover, or flipping it open to any page and reading something informative, and having wonderful photos and graphics to help bring things into sharper focus.

While reading about these artists is fun and informative, its the photos and graphics that truly make this book a standout. For anyone who feels this era was filled with exciting, important, and yes, fun music-music from a truly different time, this book will help fill in the holes and help put everything in perspective. From the groups we all know (and still listen to), to other groups we should perhaps know more about-this book fits the bill rather nicely. For anyone who wants to know more about this exciting, unrepeatable era-get this book.

SUPERB BOOK OF BRITISH POP MUSIC HISTORY!

I have been trying to get this excellent book ever since my good friend showed me his copy and I am indeed ecstatic over my success in purchasing it at a very reasonable price. The book contains 208 pages, which measure 12.1 by 9.9 inches, and contain an enormous amount of information, as well as hundreds of rare photos of the bands. In addition, there are excellent reproductions of ticket stubs, handbills, posters, rare 45 picture sleeves, insert cards, L.P. photos, rare publicity photos and rare promotional stickers. The book is filled with information about each group listed alphabetically from A Band Of Angels all the way to The Zombies. Besides the info and the photos, author Terry Rawlings includes not just the obvious groups, such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cream, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, etc., but Mr. Rawlings also includes many obscure, forgotten, and unheard of groups, which gives the reader a unique perspective of the OTHER side of The British Invasion. Similar to the Garage-Rock explosion in The United States, the book details how rich and bountiful The British Blast was during this very formative and influential period. In addition to give added perspective, some non-British groups who made an impact in the U.K., such as The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Bee Gees, The Easybeats, and even Los Bravos, are included in the book. Most of the photos are in eye-popping color, as well as the minority in black and white. To add even more perspective to the book, Terry also includes an up-to date status of where these band members are now, and what other projects they may be involved with. Some of the band photos are full-page length, while many more are included in the side-bars. Some of the OTHER groups that most people may not be too familiar with are The Action, The Attack, The Big Three, The Birds, The Creation, Dantalion's Chariot, The Deviants, (Les) Fleur-De-Lys, The Merseybeats, The Move, The Pretty Things, and The Sorrows, just to name a few of my favorites. It is apparent that the book is indeed a labor of Love, and it displays this on each and every precious page. The reader also has the choice of simply reading the book from cover to cover, or going to specific sections which detail separate groups. I cannot emphasize enough how special this book is and I am even entertaining the thought of purchasing another copy just so that I can keep it in mint condition, as opposed to wearing mine out from going over it time and time again. MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! SMRZ!

We Shall See Zion Again

This book is an excellent introduction to Enoch, for it elaborates on why he is an important figure in Christianity. The Books of Enoch have been suppressed for various reason by ancient Christian Fathers, as they were offended by the astronomical visions of Enoch. Also, modern scholars discount these writings as mere fables, but it seems that early Christian writers espoused them as doctrine: Luke, John, Jude, etc. For in the New Testament alone, Christian writers referenced Enoch's prophecies 128 times. Enoch's righteousness afforded him the opportunity to be taken up to heaven, along with the city of Zion that he erected through the implementation of God's Law. Nibley's presentation of this material is eloquent and well elucidated. His documentation of sources is superb.

However, this text suspects that the audience understands the revelations given to the Prophet Joseph Smith, concerning Enoch. These can be found in Moses 6-8 in the Pearl of Great Price. Nibley compares various Enoch texts with what has been revealed to Joseph Smith. It is eye opening and inspirational. This book is edifying and instructive in comparative literature, as Nibley expounds on constant patterns seen throughout the scriptures and their meaning for us. I enjoyed this book and hope to continue my study of Enoch.

Great for those interested in LDS apologetics

I am an evangelical Christian, yet I find Hugh Nibley's works in this series to be wonderful. While I have sold off the other books in this series, I kept this one because of its Enochic influence. It is a good purchase for someone interested in the corpus of Enochic tradition.

The loss and rediscovery of Enoch and comparisons to LDS

This erudite study includes essays discussing various Enoch texts, their suppression and loss, and more recent recovery, and even more recent appreciation in New Testament and Judaic studies. He includes essays on The Book of Enoch as a Theodicy (justification of the ways of God to man), a wide-ranging comparison of the themes of the Enoch literature with some of the oldest Egyptian, Greek, and Babylonian myths. Finally, he extensively compares the contents of the recently recovered Enoch texts from Ethiopia, Qumran, Slavonic, etc. with the Enoch material produced by Joseph Smith in 1830. Altogether mind-expanding and provocative.
