"You don't need a movie critic to tell you if you like a movie." says Bob Etier.

If you agree with my two favorite "Bob's", then you might just as well take a pass on the first three chapters of Quentin Tarantino -- Life at the Extremes by Aaron Barlow. I read them all (for the review of course) -- and learned a great deal. Some people compliantly take their prescriptions for years and enjoy the benefits thereof. Others want to know how the drug works in their bodies to provide those benefits. They do their research and discover that a bit of basic anatomy and pharmacology are needed to get their answers. Some people enjoy Tarantino's movies and are pleased with the entertainment. Others want to know "Why is it good?" or "Why does it appeal to me so much?". If you fall into the latter category, then this is the book for you!

Aaron Barlow's book contains interesting views and interpretations of Tarantino's work. It is well-written and contains a wealth of information about film-making and the idiosyncrasies of the writer / director Tarantino. A definite treat for anybody who likes movies.

About the Author
Stewart W. Holmes has made extensive forays--via general semantics and Zen--into the realm of nonverbal experience. As an officer of the Cambridge Buddhist Association, he was well acquainted with its former president, the eminent Zen scholar Daisetz Suzuki. Dr. Shinichi Hisamatsu, the founder of the Association, was his first Zen master. Among his other publications are Meaning in Language and articles for a number of journals. At present Dr. Holmes, who holds a Ph.D. in English from Yale University, is on the English faculty of Castleton State College, Vermont.

Chimyo Horioka, who is responsible for the nonverbal aspects of this volume, is Far Eastern Librarian in the Asiatic Department of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and author of many articles on Buddhist art. A priest of the Shingon sect and graduate of Koyasan University, he also studied philosophy at Hamburg and Koenigsberg universities. He has been president of the Cambridge Buddhist Association since the death of Dr. Daisetz Suzuki in 1966.

Deeply beautiful, timeless book.

I bought my copy of this small treasure fifteen years ago, and few books have ever worn so well. It is as fresh and beautiful for me today as when I first read it. The book is divided into fifteen chapters, each devoted to a central tenet of Zen Buddhism, which is then elaborated upon through the presentation of several Chinese or Japanese paintings and a number of haiku, all of which are masterfully related to the tenet through a simple prose explantion. The tone is often light and playful, but the insights are profound, and the various parts of the book flow together flawlessly. It is a true pleasure to have and to read. You can't go wrong here.

One copy of this elegant book lives in my backpack. On a 15-day walk through Wales, I used the 15 tenets -- around which the book is organized -- one each day, as the focus for that day's experiences. Holmes's Zen tenets enriched this hike immeasurably. The insights connecting text, art, and haiku are freshly realized with each meditative dip into this timeless book.

A wonderful little book, for those intertested in zen and haiku and Asian art. We in introduced to the inter-connectedness of the haiku poets and the paintings, which reflect the spirt of enlightenment. Contains many of the great haiku of the past. An excellent starter book for someone who is curious about zen, and also a fine refresher course for the long-time student of Eastern thought. I've bought many copies as gifts for friends. Highly recommended

Strengthen your legal vocabulary in seriousness and fun

This is an excellent resource for law students, paralegals, legal secretaries and law clerks. Each chapter shows the words in use and gives real-world explanations of the terms. At the end of each chapter there are true/false, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and crossword puzzle exercises to test your knowledge. This book covers just about all the major areas of law: criminal, civil, torts, bankruptcy, property, wills/estate... you name it. I swear by this book - it really helped me in pre-law. At many colleges, this book is standard.

It could be an excellent resource for law students, paralegals, legal secretaries and law clerks and it is true that each chapter shows the words in use and gives real-world explanations of the terms. But at the end of each chapter there are true/false, matching, fill-in-the-blank, and crossword puzzle exercises to test your knowledge which have not any key. I think it is very expensive in relation to the book offers you.

Useful for online learning

This book was my first introduction to law and as a potential court reporter, we don't need to know all the details, just enough to do our job. The book was perfect for that. It gives just the right amount of detail and has numerous types of exercises to reinforce the material. It would have been nice to have the fifth edition of the book as this was the one we were using in class, but I was able to follow along just fine using this book.

A first-rate summary of music in ancient Egypt

This book (published by the British Museum) is the most comprehensive treatment of Egyptian music and musicians I've ever seen in one place (at least for the general reader). It uses no footnotes, but it does give a bibliography of the massive academic tomes on which it draws. Special mention is given to the use of chironomy (gestures of the hand, arm and fingers) to represent and to conduct music, to the role of music in every aspect of Egyptian life, and to the connection between the erotic and the spiritual in Egyptian thought.
Caveat lector: The Egyptians could be graphic, even pornographic, in portraying visually and verbally the relationship between music and sexuality (and between both and their ideas of spirituality). There are several illustrations and plates given in this book which qualify as pornographic in intent and in execution. Much discussed and illustrated is symbolic rather than blatant on that level, but the connections between music, idolatry and eroticism in ancient Egypt can hardly be missed - even if it's not always perfectly clear what drives the specific connections we find.
As a source on ancient music itself, my only disappointment is that Dr. Manniche's book ignores the musical scale (again, based on chironomy) reconstructed by one of her sources, the late Dr. Hans Hickmann of the Museum of Cairo.
I had no idea Dr. Manniche had written so many other books as well, though I should've guessed this would be so.
