An Excellent Conclusion for an Awesome Series!

In the previous book, Casey and Nate tripped back and seriously messed up their own timeline. Casey returned to the past, fixed it, then returned home to a fixed timeline, but a broken relationship with Nate. Their breakup sends Casey back to the 1920s, right into the path of ANOTHER time traveler. He recognises Casey as a kindred soul and takes her back with him to the time of Paul Revere... who just happens to be Paul Jr's father! Paul Jr wants Casey to help him make sure the historical midnight ride goes off as as scheduled. But Casey knows what happens now when she meddles with the time line, should she help? And if she does, is she ready to face more changes to her own timeline... Including Nate ending up with (gasp) Jessica!
This book has Casey tripping back and forth through altered time lines, trying to find the right one and ending up in ones that are just not right. Can anyone help her make it back to her own?
The characters have matured and grown, while tripping, Casey learns some things about herself, including the fact that she' strong and can handle just about anything time throws at her... Well, almost anything...
Very good read for YA and adults alike. Totally recommend this author!

Fantastic conclusion to Counter Clockwise!

When we finished with COUNTER CLOCKWISE, none of us readers knew what to expect. Casey’s life was spiraling out of control; messing with her personal life and her time traveling life as well. With the way things were going she may have changed the world as she knew it for the worse. Only time will tell if she will be able to right all her wrongs...

There is no easy way to review this book without giving away major plots and spoilers. But I loved it! I quickly read through this book and loved every second of it. The not knowing of where Casey would end up every time she tripped was what pulled me in. And if she ended up changing her present world was what had me hanging on to every word. I was scared about her future. So many things were changing with each trip that you never knew what to expect.

If you have been keeping up with the amazing series then you are most definitely going to want to read this book. If you haven't caught up this far in the series, then what are you waiting for? Hurry!! It is a must read! 5 Stars!

Didn't want it to end!

Immediately purchased this book after reading Counter Clockwise. This story was a fitting end for the series. I hate to see Casey and Nate's story end. This picks up right where Counter Clockwise leaves off. Casey's reeling from the breakup with Nate and that sends her tripping back in time. Also, she meets another time traveler and she gets sucked into another time line with Paul Revere Jr. where she has to help him fix things. The title for this story is so fitting because once again the time loop is messed up, and nothing is as it should be so Casey is tripping from timeline to timeline trying to fix her time loop. Casey continues to grow as a character in this story. She realizes that she is a strong person, and when push comes to shove she can get herself out of her own messes. I think this story was about Casey realizing who she is and not relying on others to get her out of trouble. She was definitely a stronger character by the end of this book. However, I love Nate as well, and I wanted to see more of him in this story. Also, I felt that the ending was rushed. Love the series overall!

Accurate prediction

As Froude predicted, we gave them self government. As Froude predicted, the whites mostly fled. And as Froude predicted, everything went to hell in a handbasket.

Froude was nostalgic for the good old days of colonialism, when colonials were pirates and brigands. This empire stuff is no good he tells us, due to meddling do-gooders in Whitehall out of contact with reality. He does not quite say empire is a communist plot, since communists were not on the horizon back then, but this modern reader was apt to anachronistically feel that empire was a communist plot.

Froude's attitude to empire is well expressed by this poem, which he quotes in full

Oh ! England is a pleasant place for them that's rich and high,
But England is a cruel place for such poor folks as I ;
And such a port for mariners I'll never see again
As the pleasant Isle of Aves beside the Spanish main.

There were forty craft in Aves that were both swift and stout,
All furnished well with small arms and cannon all about ;
And a thousand men in Aves made laws so fair and free
To choose their valiant captains and obey them loyally.

Then we sailed against the Spaniard with his hoards of plate and gold,
Which he wrung with cruel tortures from Indian folks of old ;
Likewise the merchant captains, with hearts as hard as stone,
Who flog men and keelhaul them and starve them to the bone.

Oh ! palms grew high in Aves, and fruits that shone like gold,
And the colibris and parrots they were gorgeous to behold,
And the negro maids to Aves from bondage fast did flee
To welcome gallant sailors a sweeping in from sea.

Oh ! sweet it was in Aves to hear the landward breeze
A swing with good tobacco in a net between the trees,

But Scripture saith an ending to all fine things must be,
So the king's ships sailed on Aves and quite put down were we.
All day we fought like bull dogs, but they burnt the booms at night,
And I fled in a piragua sore wounded from the fight.

Nine days I floated starving, and a negro lass beside,
Till for all I tried to cheer her the poor young thing she died.
But as I lay a gasping a Bristol sail came by,
And brought me home to England here to beg until I die.

And now I'm old and going : I'm sure I can't tell where.
One comfort is, this world's so hard I can't be worse off there.
If I might but be a sea dove, I'd fly across the main
To the pleasant Isle of Aves to look at it once again.

About the Author
Author Blay Whitby is a Lecturer on Cognitive Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Sussex, UK. He has taught AI for nearly two decades, and his research focuses on the social and ethical implications of new technology. He is the author of two books and numerous papers, and is editor of Britain's foremost AI journal, AISB, and a regular commentator on this subject for the media.

A short but honest introduction to AI

In the past year or so I have been doing some reading into artificial intelligence, mostly studying from textbooks (such as the Russel/Norvig and the Poole/Mackworth textbooks) as well as a few random papers. However, I decided to read this book concurrently since I wanted to get a broad overview of the field written in plain English (as opposed to the more formal notation used in AI).

This book has a number of strengths:
-First, it is concise - it presents an overview of the field without a lot of tangential or anecdotal discussion.
-Second, it aligns very nicely with what I have encountered in the technical texts, so I know that the author is writing from a position of genuine subject-matter expertise (instead of someone writing outside of their primary domain).
-Third, it is honest and doesn't include sensational material. While I'm not as much of an expert as the author, I have degrees in electrical engineering and computer science, and I become upset when I read books by credentialed experts who abuse their credentials to peddle science fiction under the guise of science. I think that it hurts the discussion when lay readers (including some pundits and policy makers) are misled by those who should know better. I commend the author for avoiding that approach.

I would have liked to have seen more time devoted to the more recent and upcoming research topics, but overall I think that this book delivers on what it promises.

A nice and clever aproach for begginers.

I've just read the Brazilian edition. I'm a lawyer expert on computer law and researcher on robot civil law. The book offers a clever analisys on several topics regarding A.I. The author presents an imparcial presentation of trends, reasearch in course and some times show his opinion. Every single topic is followed by indication on complementary read. Brazilian translation has some minor flaw, but is OK. On the final chapter the Author seams not to believe in a real inteligent machine coming soon. It's very clear Whitby is an expert on A.I. I do recommend it as a first aproach to A.I. It's a great book on a small pack.

Clear on many basics, unjust to critical perspectives

Since AI is so much a pop culture phenomenon by now, as well as such a broad field in science and technology, I wasn't sure just where a beginners guide might choose to begin. This little book draws from all three of those wells, with brief forays into philosophy, psychology, art, music and business as well. It assumes and requires almost no familiarity with AI. The author is clear in his descriptions of the vastly different( or perhaps not as different as they seem) areas of research and generally does a good job of presenting each of them with equal enthusiasm even when they themselves seem opposed. That said, I found much of the ideology propagated in this book deeply worrisome.

Throughout this book many ethical questions are raised about AI, but all are dismissed so quickly that no basis for judgement beyond one's preconceptions and the author's pushiness could possibly have been reached. Of any criticism, John Searle's Chinese Room Argument receives the most attention and dreadfully less than it deserves. That particular argument has a long conversation attached to it that would surely mire the book, but it should be made clear that the jury is very much still out on whether a digital AI could ever "understand" or achieve consciousness. If this or the equally brief discussion of consciousness interests you then I would highly recommend looking up one of Searle's Philosophy of Mind courses that are floating around for free on the web.

The author also seems to hold the view that the greatest success to be reached in AI is in creations with broad commercial appeal or application. Near the end of the book, and almost as an aside he mentions that by a great majority the largest source of AI funding is from the military. No surprise there, but surely the implications of this warrant more than a paragraph or two of discussion. In yet another extremely dubious comment, the author claims that, as in previous technological shifts, AI is likely to be very turbulent for the economy at first but will surely level out soon, as we highly adaptable humans rearrange our economic system to use the new tech to our best advantage. I just don't have the heart or the patience to express how naive I find this view, but if you'd like to read a very informative book by someone who does then try Martin Ford's book Lights In The Tunnel. In it, he explains many of the potential and actual perils that our globalized economies face from automation and new technology.

All of this monomaniacal jubilation is unfortunately quite endemic of AI proponents. It is very possible that having more of our needs met more easily and more completely by machines will not serve to make us better, smarter and more efficient people, but will instead make us fat, lazy, stupid and antisocial, preferring the company of our technologies to each other and often unable to tell the difference. At one point in the text the author says that all the best technologies are invisible, meaning that we don't even have to think about them or notice them when we use them. On that note, I'll leave you with a little Marshall McLuhan:

"The environmental is invincibly persuasive when ignored."

Anarchy is not the solution

If you want to get yourself into legal trouble and potentially face bankruptcy, use this book and follows its instruction. Freeman pays no attention to the laws that govern society e.g. property rights, and the laws in place to address problems that arise. His research methodology lacks any form of mathematical rigor that is available to analyze trends and therefore eliminate bias.

Strategic Management by Freeman is a classic. It should be required reading for every manager and MBA student. When Freeman wrote the book, stakeholder thinking was still rather new and unusual - at least in its explicit form -, while it is now, thanks in large part to Freeman, widely accepted.
The book is, like many management books, relevant both to academic research and to day-to-day business. But, unlike many management books, this publications can actually be read both by academics and by managers, which may explain in part its impact.
Thje book makes clear that strategy, especially in the stakeholder-form, requires a proper understanding of both ethics and systems thinking. It should at least make the reader think about both.

Very good but a bit dated

Relatively short read that covers all of the topics related to understanding the stakeholder approach. The examples/cases are very good but you have to have been around a while to even remember some of the names. If you look at them for the structure of the problem and the solution you should be fine.

Very Good Level of Detail - Ideal Beginner Book

Don't judge this book by its cover like I did! First, I thought My Felted Friends by Mia Underwood was aimed specifically at a more juvenile audience; it is not. Second, the animals shown on the cover are actually not among the best in the book. Once I got a better look, I saw many more sophisticated, realistic, and extraordinary felted animals such as the Little Hedgehog and the Cheeky Squirrel.

What sets Underwood's book apart from the rest is the level of detail in her instructions; every element is clearly and adequately worded, from adding stripes to a tiger to making realistically colored eyes. Plus, there is no water involved, making this an ideal first felting book for beginners. Underwood uses primarily merino wool, but a few projects call for carded wool, wool top (somewhat pre-processed), and raw washed sheep fleece. She provides exact amounts - in ounces and/or grams - of whichever fibers are called for. *

If you've not already caught the felting bug, Mia Underwood's My Felted Friends will have you collecting wool in all sorts of colors, and maybe one day you will be dyeing your own. (But that's another book!)

* I think a postage scale would be a beneficial and surprisingly inexpensive purchase. (Plus it's great to own a scale if you want to pre-post your own packages and avoid those post office lines.)

Why Read History

Writing History in the Global Era, 2014, by Lynn Hunt, Distinguished Research Professor at UCLA. This is, as she says, "… A short book about a big subject,…" (p. 1). Anyone who reads history will profit from her orientation about this field. I have read history ever since I was a young adult, embarrassed about my ignorance. At age 85 I still find it fascinating. My impression is that historians in the 21st-century are doing a much better job than in the 20th century--better intellectual quality, more thorough studies of sources, and even better notes. What I did not realize was that behind the scenes the paradigms that have shaped history writing and still do. Hunt has filled me in on this aspect of history writing.
Hunt is blunt about history writers, as well as readers: "… humans look for a logic in their stories that is related to their own goals." (p. 127). She identifies four paradigms (over-arching accounts of metanarratives of historical developments) along with goals, in the post World War II period: Marxism (eventual withering of the state) modernization (social progress) Annales school (long term social histories) and identity politics (social movements). In the period of 1960 to1990s criticism of these paradigms arose: cultural studies, post structuralism, post modernism and post colonials. In the 21st-century, globalization themes are pursued in historical narratives, especially in response to Marx and 20th century modernization aging enthusiasts. When you pick up a history study, it is well to know the sequence of events! And to check out your own goals before throwing down a volume in disgust.
Why can't history be more scientific? Hunt addresses this issue. The problem: the impossibility of separating analysis and causal explanation from narrative. We all are storytellers, and our conscious and unconscious goals may warp what we perceived and conclude. There is no escape from this. Solution: recognition the major narratives are tied to a particular moment in time. Hunt emphasizes that history has no set course from which a story, especially about the future, can be grounded. She recommends starting from a particular moment and researching the history of the past. Trends can be discovered, but they are not arrows to determine straight-way the future. And there can be various arrows discerned. "… history has no preordained end points…" (p.128).
As I read her book, philosopher Philip Kitcher's ethical-project concept came to my mind. He has concluded no external reality can be a base for what is good or bad. We have to have a conversation in our present moment and hopefully arrive at a consensus, or at least a peaceful compromise or tolerance. Kitcher is hopeful for ethical progress from our present moment and dismissive of speculative programs to future times. What can we do now to make the world a little more peaceful, rather than set a goal for world peace. Eric Carle is an acclaimed and beloved creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for young children. Such cute prints and good quality

These prints are really cute and printed on thick quality paper. 12 x 16 in size -- 5 vertical, 7 horizontal. I bought them for my playroom and found some inexpensive frames at Michael's with 11 x 14 mat openings. Most of the prints were too large to fit in that size mat, but I did find 4 that worked. I looked for frames with a 12 x 16 mat with no success. But if you don't want a mat, there are lots of 12 x 16 frames out there. I wish there was a second book of these with additional prints -- they are so great looking!

Beautiful, big, vibrant prints

Great set of prints. Purchased to help decorate our baby's room. Prints are a bit of a off size (14 x 16"), but I was able to find the frames at my local Michael's store. They are on a heavier cardstock, very vibrant, great selections from Carle's books. Extra prints are going to make good gifts, too (framed).

Perfect for Nursery

These Eric Carle prints are perfect for a bright, Carle themed nursery. The prints aren't all from popular Eric Carle books, but many of the pictures are things that are highly exciting for babies and toddlers like trains, rubber ducks, and giraffes.

I found that a cheap, colorful way to frame the prints was Ikea's Nyttja frames. I bought red (framed the caterpillar and the alphabet), green (sloth in the tree and the giraffe), and blue (penguins and train). The frames were inexpensive and the colors complement the prints well. Tiny bit of trimming to get the perfect fit, but quick and easy and fun to look at.
