About the Author
Simine Short is an aviation historian who has researched and written extensively on the history of motorless flight. Her first book, Glider Mail: An Aerophilatelic Handbook, received numerous research awards worldwide and is considered a standard reference by aerophilatelists and aviation researchers. She lives with her husband outside Chicago, Illinois.

A Good Biography of a Difficult Subject

Octave Chanute certainly stands among the greatest of American Engineers, but reading this book made me realize that he is a difficult subject for a biography. I think that there are two main avenues toward making a biography interesting and entertaining for the general reader. First, it's good if the subject is a colorful character. Chanute was brilliant, diligent, disciplined, generous, and hard-working, but hardly colorful. He seems to have gotten along well with everyone, and his skill in getting people to work together was a major part of his greatness, but he probably achieved that in part by suppressing his own feelings and opinions for the most part. The result of this is that the biographer is given very little to work with in filling out a portrait of the man. Having read this book, I ended up not really feeling like I knew the man.
The other avenue to writing an engaging biography is to use the subject's life to illuminate major historical developments and trends. This requires supplying the reader with enough historical context to fully appreciate how the subject's life fits into the bigger picture. From this point of view, Chanute provides a glut of possibilities. The man had his fingers in so many important historical developments that providing context for all of them would require a book of about eight volumes. So it is difficult to fully appreciate this biography unless you come to it with quite a lot of background in history. Chanute began his railroad work as a lowly worker on the first line connecting New York City to Albany, which obviously was pretty early in the development of railroads. The building of railroads in this era was an enterprise more exciting and important than the building of the Internet is today. It was the leading edge of technology, reshaping the face of the nation and the national economy. Chanute was deeply involved in the engineering of these roads, but it's all a bit hard to appreciate without a lot more context. In Kansas, "squatters" violently opposed the building of railroads through their lands. Why? Chanute, as the planner of the railroads, was among the first to know where the railroads were going and used this knowledge to buy land cheap that would soon be more valuable. Apparently this wasn't thought to be very unethical in those days, but it is now. I'd love to know more about how those views evolved. Chanute was involved in some of the early disputes between management and labor on the railroads, and some of the early efforts of the government to regulate railroad rates, but little of the background to those very important stories is here.
I know a little railroad history, but the chapter on wood preservation pretty much lost me. It goes into detail about things like different methods of marking which railroad ties had been treated in which ways. I'm not sure I needed to know that much about date nails.
The last few chapters, which cover Chanute's contributions to aviation, were a lot more fun for me. That may be because I know more about aviation history, but I think the author was enjoying that subject matter much more than the rest too.
So this is a scholarly and well researched biography of a very interesting man, but general readers may find it a bit hard going.

An important work, but

Octave Chanute was an engineer who made massive contributions in the second half of the nineteenth century and in the early years of twentieth to the development of the US railroad system, and in encouraging and participating in transportation's technology's next step - flight, so, for anyone interested in either of those subjects, any serious new book is worth a look. The author's research has been massive, and this, at least to my knowledge, is the most significant book yet about Chanute. But, there are a couple of "buts". First, aviation buffs should be warned that most of Chanute's life was associated with the railroads, and hence railroads occupy much of the book, and there is only so much one can absorb about the preservation of railroad ties. And aviation buffs might also wish to know that the Pratt & Whitney company referred to was the company whose name the current Pratt & Whitney Engine Company inherited. The other big but is that, although I seriously recommend this book to folk interested in Chanute, be warned, this book is a tough read. A firm editor's hand would have made life much easier for readers.

Well reseached read

Documenting the life of Octave Chanute, the author Simine Short, has embarked upon a formidable task in which to chronicle this amazing individuals place, not only in early aviation, but in early American civil engineering. Through his sound engineering prowess, Chanute was a true pioneer in laying down the "iron road" into a rough and unforgiving American heartland.
Through his structured and analytical approach as a successful bridge and railroad designer, incredibly Chanute also made a significant, yet highly successful sideways career move to that of industrial chemist. Through his pioneering work in timber preservative treatments, Chanute was also a leading pioneering conservationist, strongly advocating the need to conserve and manage America's then rapidly diminishing timber resource.
With the second half of the book covering Chanute's aviation exploits, the author highlight's the almost totally forgotten role Chanute played in the development of modern aviation. Standing tall amongst such imminent names such as Moedebeck, Mouillard, and Lilienthal, Chanute was amongst the first to apply a logical and scientific based approach to the mysteries of flight, and was a leading figure in encouraging and supporting the advent of powered flight, possibly years before it's time.
Through his unstinting support to openly share new information and bring all aviation experimenters together into the engineering fraternity, there is no doubt as to Chanute's role in bringing America to the forefront of aviation technology in the late 1800's; one which seemed to thrive amongst its small but determined band of enthusiasts who's ambitions were not saddled with restrictive European class systems, and enjoyed an almost unique pioneering "can do" spirit that ran as a common thread throughout the population.
With Lilienthal paving the way with simple weight-shift type gliders, the next big step for the early pioneers was the conundrum of a satisfactory flight control system. It is interesting to note that at the time of the Wright Brothers breakthroughs, (at which time they were in close contact with Chanute), both Chanute and the Wright's were working at the same problem from different ends of a common spectrum; the Wrights looking to perfect a pilot controlled stability system, whilst Chanute strived for built-in mechanical stability, when in reality the solution was a combination of both.
As an aviation enthusiast, I initially dreaded the thought of wading through so much of the book that focussed on Chanute's civil engineering life, however I was pleasantly surprised as the author paints an interesting and historical insight into the creation of modern-day America, from which I drew a far deeper understanding. On a personal level I would have liked to have seen a few more modern-day photos of some of the places and rail lines that these hardy pioneers endured in establishing what today is still a significant part of America's vast transport network. This left me feeling no closer to Chanute in a modern day context, when in actual fact much of his efforts contributed directly in what can still be viewed today in some tangible form, even to the extent that the township of Chanute, (which bears his name), is still home to what is today a thriving community who are proud of their pioneering father.
But these are small points indeed however, and should not be seen as distracting the reader from the overall commendable result that the author has achieved.
